DEAD MAN TALKING

ETERNAL NEIGHBORS

Thanks to the power of social media, I just came across this show edited many moons ago.

During my time freelancing at NBC, I never knew what the subject matter of the next project would be until a few days before (if that). It was very exciting, it was like traveling the world, but not knowing where you were visiting until you walked off of the plane. This show was “a trip” that I never expected.

The worst part about being an editor up until the early 2000s is that you never got to go anywhere, you job was to sit in a dark room – I can honestly say that I was happy to have not been on this location. NBC sent a team of video journalists to Macomb County Michigan with a mandate to follow medical examiner Dr. Daniel Spitz. He had agreed to give us unprecedented access to his morgue and to his team of investigators who, in shifts, were on call 24/7/365. The NBC production crew was instructed to shoot all the video they possibly could and we would make as much as possible out of it back in New York. The end result was three 60 minute episodes, of which I cut one. It was a creepy yet fascinating project to work on, being a bystander watching people have their last doctor’s appointment ever.

(much of this description was paraphrased from a write up by producer Caroline Sommers)
